SERGEANT JOHN LUKE,  A. & S. Hrs.

John was born at Cuil, Kilmorich, youngest of four children to John Luke and Isabella Brodie.  Both the Luke’s and the Brodie’s were established families of Cairndow  from records began.

John’s grandfather Duncan Luke was living in Drishaig when he got married in 1820, On 1841 Census he was  living at Ardganavan .  From 1851 onwards the Luke family line lived in Cuil cottage until 2004.   The Lukes were small crofters and herring fishermen or employed by Ardkinglas Estate.  Isabella Brodie’s family lived at Laglingartan, On the 1861 Census she was living with her brother John Brodie, Parochial School Master.  She and John Luke were married at  Ardno and brought up their children at Cuil Cottage. 

In 1901 Census John Jnr. was the only child living at home with his parents, he was Estate Labourer.  In 1907 John had  married  Janet Morrison McKay in Kilmorich.   1911 Census, lived in the family home, Cuil Cottage, he was an Estate Labourer.

John died of wounds on 16th November, 1916.  His cousin Elizabeth Luke’s son Kenneth Campbell MacDonald also died during WW1.
