John Smillie was born in Kilmorich. His Mother was Sarah McArthur, her family were living in Tighcladdich in 1841 Census and she continued to stay there after she Married William James J. Smillie in 1891.
William had various occupations through the years, Stone Cutter in 1891, Shoemaker in 1901 and Estate Labourer, 1911. William and Sarah had two children, Isabella Mary, and John (Jack).
John was a Private in the 1/8th Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. He died of wounds in France, aged 19.
