Private Archibald McCallum 8th Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders

Archibald McCallum was named on both Cairndow and Strachur War Memorial. He was born at Laglingarten in Kilmorich Parish, not far from St. Catherines. The border line between Kilmorich and Strachur is after Tighcladdich. The family were well known and connected to both parishes. His Father, Grandfather and Gt Grandfather were all called Archibald McCallum and they all lived within the same area thoughout the years. His Gt. Grandfather was a Joiner and his Grandfather a Herring Curer/Coal Merchant. His Aunt was Post Mistress at St. Catherines.
On the 1911 Census his parents were living at Glen Fyne, Father was a Gamekeeper/Shepherd.
Archibald served with the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, he was killed in France on 13th November, 1916 at the age of 23.
Archibald’s brother, Alexander (Alister) also enlisted, he survived the war, but died later at only 30 years.
