James was born in Kilmorich, second eldest of four children born to James and Janet Pender. James Snr. was a Major in 8th Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. Janet’s parents were 3rd cousin of Sir Andrew Noble.
When James was born the family were living in Ardno with Eldest child, Inez, who was born in Mid Lothian. A further two childen were born at Ardno, Thomas and John. In 1901 Census it shows the family staying in Helensburgh where James attended Larchfield Academy, then Edinburgh Academy and Edinburgh University. He completed his engineering apprenticeship at Armstrongs in Elswich before he joined up. He was killed in action in March 1915.
The Electoral Roll shows James Pender Snr. still registered at Ardno thoughout. 1914/1915 Register shows Lieutenant James Pender Jnr. As Lodger at Ardno. From Anthea Penders information, James Pender Snr. was away for periods in 1901 and 1902, he had joined the Army’s Remount Dept. during the Boer War and was responsible for the horses on board ship on four journeys to South Africa from different countries. His Wife Janet took over the running the farm at Ardno.
